Brick & Brew Athletes of the Week - Gerbino & Sands

Tue Nov 21, 2017

Women's rugby and the football teams were playing for championships this past weekend. The rugby team vying for a national title while the football team was aiming for an Ivy League title. Both teams had outstanding performances by players on the field. Senior Frankie Sands finished her career with a try in the semifinal and an assist in the final game of the season. Jared Gerbino rushed for four touchdowns to lead the football squad over rival Princeton.

Their efforts are rewarded by being named the Hanover Brick and Brew Athletes of the Week.

Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as the Hanover Brick and Brew Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.

Frankie Sands, Sr., Essex, Vt., Women's Rugby

Frankie Sands had a good conclusion to her career at Dartmouth, scoring a try in the Big Green’s 17-12 victory over Harvard in the NIRA Semifinal and assisting on a try in the 29-20 loss to Quinnipiac in the national championship. This was the first time in program history that Dartmouth had made it to the NIRA final. Sands ended the season third on the team with 35 points from seven tries.

Jared Gerbino, So., Rush, N.Y., QB, Football

Sophomore Jared Gerbino saved his best performance of the season for the final game, rushing 32 times for 202 yards and four touchdowns to help Dartmouth defeat Princeton this past Saturday, 54-44, in the fifth-highest-scoring game in Ivy League history. Every one of his four scores either tied the game or gave the Big Green the lead, with his final trek into the end zone putting Dartmouth on top for good at 48-44 with one second left. The Wildcat quarterback is the first Big Green player to rush for 200 yards in a game in six years, and the first with four rushing touchdowns in a contest in 26 years.
