Kaskey, Traynor Named to All-New England Team

Tue Nov 28, 2017

HANOVER, N.H. — The New England Football Writers’ Association (NEFWA) unveiled its selections for the All-New England Division I Football Team on Tuesday, and two Dartmouth players were honored with their inclusion — offensive lineman Matt Kaskey and linebacker Jack Traynor.

Kaskey, an All-Ivy League First Team selection this year, started all 10 games at left tackle on an offensive line that had the Big Green ranked in the top half of the league in scoring, rushing, passing and total yards, joining the league champion (Yale) as the only teams that could make that claim. In league play, Dartmouth ranked third in each of those categories. Kaskey was instrumental in keeping the Big Green quarterbacks safe as opponents registered just 10 sacks all year, a rate (one per game) that ranks 15th nationally and second among Ancient Eight teams. The 6-7, 325-pound native of Winnetka, Illinois, also paved the way for two Dartmouth backs to rank among the top seven in total rushing yardage in league games only.

The Big Green’s other All-Ivy League First Team member, Traynor, is also an Illinois native hailing from Lake Forest. The 6-0, 230-pound junior started every contest and ranked second in the league with 98 tackles while averaging exactly 10 per game in conference action. His five tackles for a loss tied for the team lead, and he also contributed a sack, an interception, four pass breakups and a forced fumble. Traynor had at least five tackles in every game, five times reaching double figures with a career-high 17 at Harvard. His efforts helped Dartmouth rank third in fewest points and total yards allowed, and second against the run (11th nationally).

A total of nine Ivy League players earned a spot on the All-New England Team with four coming from Yale, two from Harvard and one from Brown. Both Boston College and New Hampshire also had four players honored, matching Yale for the most from one team.

Dartmouth has had at least two players chosen by the NEFWA for the all-region team for each of the past eight seasons. In a case of déjà vu, the Big Green had an offensive lineman (Dave Morrison) and a linebacker (Folarin Orimolade) named to the team last year as well.

Dartmouth finished the 2017 season with an 8-2 record, 5-2 in the Ivy League, to finish one game behind Yale in the conference standings in a tie for second place with Columbia. The Big Green handed the Bulldogs their lone loss of the campaign, 28-27, in a thrilling 21-point comeback on homecoming back on Oct. 7.
